STEM Training for Humanities Students in Georgia

From Humanities to High-Tech: How Georgian International University GIU Transformed Learning Through the WP3 of STEM4Humanities Project
Blending Worlds: GIU’s Strategic Success in Implementing WP3 Activities
Georgian International University GIU has achieved remarkable success in implementing the Work Package 3 (WP3) activities of the STEM4Humanities project—an ambitious initiative aimed at bridging the divide between science and the humanities. This accomplishment represents a major milestone in GIU’s strategic mission to create an educational ecosystem where future professionals can merge creativity, analytical thinking, and technological literacy. Through its leadership in WP3, GIU effectively advanced interdisciplinary learning, positioning itself as a key driver of educational innovation within Georgia and beyond.
Beyond Translation: Building a Bridge Between STEM and Humanities
As part of WP3, GIU made substantial contributions to the development of STEM-oriented curricula and training materials tailored to students from humanities and social sciences backgrounds. To enhance accessibility, these materials were carefully translated into Georgian, ensuring that every participant could fully engage with the learning process. This multilingual and inclusive approach directly supported partner institutions in establishing the project’s MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) platform effectively. As a result, GIU successfully engaged 10 students from disciplines such as law, journalism, mass communication, psychology, philology, and linguistics—students who not only completed the STEM training scheme but also gained essential interdisciplinary competencies needed in the modern, technology-driven world.
Inclusion in Action: Expanding Opportunities and Empowering Communities
A particularly inspiring achievement within GIU’s WP3 activities was the involvement of students from Sokhumi State University, a university-in-exile currently operating in Tbilisi due to the 1990s war in Abkhazia. By engaging these students in the STEM training scheme, GIU demonstrated its commitment to inclusivity, accessibility, and solidarity—core European Union values deeply embedded in the STEM4Humanities project. Furthermore, GIU’s continuous focus on involving as many students as possible in the MOOC-based training scheme not only strengthened Georgia’s human capital but also contributed to the country’s broader societal development. In doing so, GIU transformed the project from an educational activity into a national contribution, empowering humanities students with new STEM skills while fostering innovation and social progress across disciplines.
Conclusions: Shaping the Future
Through the successful implementation of WP3 activities, Georgian International University GIU has set a strong precedent for integrating STEM education into the humanities and social sciences. By developing localized training materials, engaging students from diverse academic backgrounds, and promoting inclusivity through partnerships such as the one with Sokhumi State University, GIU has demonstrated how education can transcend traditional boundaries. The university’s efforts not only equipped its students with essential 21st-century skills but also reinforced the European Union’s core values of inclusivity, accessibility, and innovation. As a result, GIU’s contribution to the STEM4Humanities project stands as a model of how higher education can drive both individual empowerment and national development—transforming learning into a powerful instrument for societal progress.
